My Sixteenth Birthday
I spend my sixteenth birthday
saying Hail Marys in a church pew.
Hoping things will be okay,
I attend the funeral of you.
I trade my candles and cake
in exchange for a pair of high heels.
Gives me shivers I can’t shake
because for you, everyone kneels.
Vexatious as a splinter,
for a funeral it’s three days’ wait in the middle of winter.
